using mythology as a storytelling connection

Storytelling + Visual Identity

National Geographic Society’s Pristine Seas is a world-renowned ocean conservation program dedicated to protecting the ocean’s last vital places. To support the launch of a five-year expedition journey, the program needed an identity that captured the spirit of exploration, discovery, and conservation while creating a deeper connection with audiences.

The refreshed visual identity was inspired by mythology and exploration narratives, using storytelling as the foundation for a new expedition experience. I led the art direction and design of a fleet of expedition vessels, including ships, boats, and submersibles, translating the program’s mission into a cohesive visual system from concept through installation.

MYTHOLOGY BACKGROUND

Jason's quest for the Golden Fleece culminates in three legendary trials: harnessing fire-breathing bulls, surviving the warriors that emerge from dragon's teeth sown into the earth, and stealing the fleece from the dragon that never sleeps.

The final design that was chosen was a simplified version of the original mythology storytelling concept proposed above. Although the concept never found it’s way onto the ship, a rebrand and boat updates were officially launched in 2025.
