Creating Space for Community Through Art
Program Design + Creative Thinking
Cynthia-Reeves Gallery was located on the campus of MASS MoCA, one of the country’s leading contemporary art institutions, but the space lacked the foot traffic and community engagement of its surroundings. I developed an exhibition program that transformed the gallery into an active space for art-making and exchange, pairing short artist residencies with opportunities for artists from around the world to create large-scale installations on site. Rather than separating the making from the finished work, artists were encouraged to work in the gallery during open hours, inviting visitors to observe the process, ask questions, and engage directly with the artists. The program brought together emerging and established artists while creating a more accessible and participatory relationship between art, artists, and the community.
I led the project from concept through execution, developing the program strategy, identifying and curating participating artists and artwork, and designing the exhibitions and supporting programming. I also developed media relations and community events to expand the gallery’s reach and build engagement beyond the exhibition itself. Together, these efforts repositioned the gallery as an active cultural space within the MASS MoCA campus and created new opportunities for the community to participate in the creative process.
